The University of Nebraska Medical Centre (UNMC) in a joint effort with experts from the US, UK and Sweden has used Snow Owl to build a SNOMED based observable ontology covering genomic observables, and anatomic & molecular pathology. Biobanks that capture data for cancer patients can utilize this ontology to recruit patients for clinical trials by complex criteria that would be difficult or impossible to look up without SNOMED’s semantics.

This is the first time SNOMED is used for genomic data representation with the help of Snow Owl’s concept model extension and concrete domain features. Addressing this semantic gap in SNOMED helps keeping up with the innovations in the field of molecular diagnostics and cancer research, resulting in more targeted treatments and higher efficacy in cancer therapy.
